Update on the 2020 Boxer Reunion PER Gary Torlina's E-mail 06/07/2020
After much thought and consideration, it is my opinion that this year’s Boxer reunion be postponed until 2021.
This decision is also backed by the majority of the directors. I have also been in contact with our V.P. and reunion sponsor Joe Mitchell
who is in full agreement. I have also talked with Ken Wyant, who is sponsoring the 2021 reunion in Pittsburgh, and he
agrees and has said he has no problem postponing the Pittsburgh reunion until 2022. Many thanks to Ken for his understanding.
Obviously the reason for this is due to the Covid 19 pandemic and our complete lack of ability to continue our plans for the reunion
with all the uncertainty of the future particularly, due to the fact that the governor of California appears that his state will be one
of the last states to open up enough to hold a reasonable reunion there.
All is not lost however and my reasons that made this decision easier are as follows:
1. Ken Wyant is willing to postpone the Pittsburgh reunion to 2022.
2. Gatherings Plus has stated that most of this year’s reunions they were planning has cancelled
and they will put a notice of the cancellation on their website.
In addition, the total amount of restitution received from Powers is now $8275.00. Getting ready to put together our news letter for the Boxer Shorts. The purpose of the association is to reunite shipmates who served aboard
these ships and to perpetuate the association through

3. The Holiday Inn Bayside Hotel has told me they could postpone with no problem.
4. I was told by a sailor currently on the Boxer that the ship still will be in port for its repairs
until the end of 2021 or the beginning of 2022.
5. I was told by the ship's public relations office that they would not be able to tell us if we can board the ship
until August of this year. I would think most of the major repairs will be done by the fall of 2021.
6. How many of the LHD4 sailors that were planning on going has had their plans turned upside down due to possible layoffs
or other reasons due to the virus.
7. Most of our members are in the high-risk age for the virus.
If you have any thing for the good and welfare of our membership, stories or news of up comming events
please share by sending them to the Editor.
